Quentin Williams writes about the status of Kaaps in South Africa, particularly in the Western Cape, and what the language variety means for decolonial language empowerment. He argues that activists of the new language movement AfriKaaps are challenging conventional boundaries of language reception and have an important role to play in strengthening positive perceptions of Kaaps and its speakers in schools and in broader society.
